Growing up in New Hampshire, flutist Douglas Worthen began private lessons with Brooks DeWetter Smith and Katherine Borst Jones. Worthen attended the Hartt School in Hartford, CT, and finished degrees in Music Education and Music Performance in three years. In 1974, he won a full scholarship to L’Institut d’Hautes Etudes Musicales in Montreux, Switzerland. This helped him see the value of languages (French and German) and established his first connections with European musicians. He stayed in Europe until the late seventies recording, playing chamber music, and studying with the greatest artists of the era, including Rampal, Galway, and Nicolet. He completed a Master’s Degree in Flute Performance at the New England Conservatory in 1980.
In 1980, Worthen began working with Quantz Baroque Trio and taught at the Phillips Exeter Academy. In1985 he became second flute of the Handel & Haydn Society, performing regularly with that ensemble until the late nineties. His recording of Classical Flute Quartets with the Mannheim Quartet dates from this period.
In 1989, Worthen became head of the Music Department of the Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts. In 1993 he recorded works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert, with pianist Janice Weber on the Leonarda label. He is now a co-owner of Falls House Press (A division of Theodore Presser).
While keeping up his early music interests, Worthen has also performed with the North Shore Music Theatre (Beverly, MA) in Miss Saigon, Showboat, and other musicals. He has been Principal Flute of Granite State Symphony Orchestra (Concord, NH) for thirteen years.
Worthen has performed in Switzerland, Japan, Russia and the Netherlands. In 2004 he was awarded an artist fellowship from the State of New Hampshire. Beginning in the fall of 2005 he returned to Hartt School of Music, where he finished his Doctorate in Flute Performance under John Wion, while also teachinga variety of courses in music history. Dr. Worthen was appointed to the faculty of SIUC in August of 2008.
