“Inside the Bachs” – Sept 17 -18

A Baroque festival awaits Southern Illinois as the SIU School of Music “Inside the Bachs” series takes the stage at Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall-SIU campus this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18.

The Saturday concert at 7:30 p.m. will feature SIU faculty members, Douglas Worthen (Baroque flute) and Eric Lenz (Baroque cellist), performing together with Maryse Carlin (Kingsbury Ensemble director and harpsichordist, Washington Univ.) and Paul Thompson (Kingsbury Baroque flute, SEMO).  The Kingsbury Ensemble, founded in 1999 in St. Louis, has achieved status as one of the predominant groups in the Midwest staging authentic performances of music from the Renaissance to the early Romantic period.   Composers from the high Baroque era, whose music will be featured in this concert, are Jean-Marie Leclair, Georg Philipp Telemann, Jean-Philippe Rameau, and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier.  The unique nature of this concert is its focus on chamber ensemble music for two Baroque flutes, with continuo accompaniment of harpsichord and Baroque cello.

Sunday’s concert at 5 p.m. will feature five SIU faculty members and twelve students performing works from six composers, including J.S. Bach and C.P.E. Bach, as well as Boismortier, Telemann, Vivaldi, and contemporary composer, David Maslanka.  The players include soloists, a duet, trios, a saxophone quartet, and a flute quintet.  Performing will be SIU faculty members Jeanine Wagner (soprano), Robert Allison (trumpet), Jennifer Presar (horn), David Lyons (piano), and Douglas Worthen (flute).

Both concerts are free of charge, and open to the public.

Southern Illinois Flute Choir 2011 Spring Concert

Please join the Southern Illinois Flute Choir on Saturday, April 30th for an evening of classical and contemporary flute music, under the direction of artistic director Dr. Douglas Worthen and assistant conductor Izabel Zambrzycki. The Spring Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 214 W. Main St., in Carbondale.

Musical selections will include works by Giovanni Battista Sammartini, Jonathan Cohen, Anne McGinty, and Felix Mendelssohn.

Sammartini was one of the earliest Symphony composers, and his work led the way to the Classical style of composition.  Symphony No. 1, J.C. 7, arranged by Lisa R. McArthur, is a 3-movement work with a 1st movement in sonata form, a lyrical 2nd movement with beautiful upper register harmonies, and a joyful 3rd movement.

Masques is an original composition by flute choir specialist Anne McGinty, who is known throughout the world as the most prolific woman composer in the field of concert band literature.

Helen’s Backyard, by contemporary American composer Jonathan Cohen, is a celebration of Helen Cohen’s life told through a backyard day, presented in five movements.

Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture is considered by many to be his masterpiece. This challenging arrangement by Rick Pierce utilizes the entire range of the flute choir.
