Holiday Concert

It’s been a busy year 2011 for the Southern Illinois Flute Society.  From hosting Mark Sparks, Principal Flute of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, in January to hosting Gary Schocker, flutist-composer-pianist, in October as part of the Illinois Flute Society’s annual flute festival, to a few Halloween appearances throughout the region, the year 2011 is quickly drawing to a close.

The Flute Choir is in final rehearsals for its Holiday Concert to be held Friday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 214 W. Main, Carbondale.  Admission to the concert is free.

The Choir, at eighteen members strong, utilizes a variety of flutes:  bass, alto, piccolo, and C flutes.  The December 2 Concert will feature mostly seasonal music, highlighted by choral singing and drums.

The Southern Illinois Flute Society would like to thank our wonderful fans who attend our concerts, and those who so generously help us with our financial needs so that our concerts can be offered free to the general public.   We hope to see you December 2!

Meet Our Members: Kathryn Waldyke

Kathryn WaldykePlease join us in welcoming new member Kathryn Waldyke.  Here’s what Kathryn has to say about playing the flute:

“Hello! I’m Kathryn Waldyke, and I’m new to living in Southern Illinois, teaching at SIU, and the SIU flutes, but my flute and I go way back, to 1975.  I played in middle and high school and college bands and orchestras.  I joined my first flute choir in college and loved it.  The 5 years after college were extremely busy with more school and training, but after that I was stationed with the US Navy in Corpus Christi, Texas–home of the Coastal Bend Flute Choir, as a co-worker informed me, and I played with them for 3 years. After that, in Oregon and Illinois (Champaign) my flute forays were mostly limited to playing at church, and my group musical outlet was singing with “Amasong,” a women’s chorus in C-U. This semester I’ll be playing bass (tenor) flute, as I love the tone and of course wearing black and carrying a larger flute make one look slimmer.”

Kathryn, we’re glad to have you on board!
